Did you know that the biggest cause of tooth loss worldwide is due to periodontal disease?
Periodontics is the science that diagnoses, prevents and treats diseases of the gums and surrounding tissue necessary for tooth support.
The diagnosis of this disease is important, as 75% of the world population has some form of periodontal disease, popularly known as pyorrhea.
This usually a painless disease and may go unnoticed for many years. If not diagnosed and treated early, gum disease can spread - destroying the bone and surrounding tissue that sustain the teeth - resulting in mobility and loss of teeth.
Risk factors of periodontal disease are tobacco, lack of oral hygiene, and some systemic diseases such as uncontrolled diabetes.
An early-diagnosed lesion greatly improves its prognosis, preventing the development of a possible malignant tumor - oral cancer.
Treatment is primarily based on surgery and radiotherapy. However, the most important factor is an early diagnosis, which significantly improves the survival rate of this disease.
It is therefore essential to visit the Dentist at least twice a year to periodically check the entire oral cavity.
At the Hospital Particular do Algarve, a Multidisciplinary Team of Specialists and facilities provide the best possible follow-up, using the best techniques and equipment available.
