What is Hand Therapy?

Hand Therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper limb, hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder.
 

Hand Therapist

The Hand Therapist is an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist who through specialized training and advanced clinical experience, has acquired the necessary skills for the treatment of injuries of the upper limb resulting from trauma, congenital or acquired deformities or diseases.
 

Hand Therapy Department of the HPA

The service operates with an Occupational Therapist specializing in Hand Therapy, with the necessary means in order to offer patients an evaluation, treatment and/or providing orthoses of the upper limb for pre and post surgical procedures, primarily in orthopedics / traumatology, rheumatology and plastic surgery.


Strong Points of the Department within the Group

  • Treatment and/or individual evaluation, of all pathologies of the upper limb requiring rehabilitation;
  • Whenever necessary, initiation of early treatment in the immediate post operative period, in accordance with internationally defined protocols;
  • Teamwork with various other medical specialties;
  • Keeping the patient informed on  what are the goals of the treatment and for the success of the hand therapy the  importance of collaboration between the patient, hand therapist and physician.

 

Main Areas of Intervention

Fractures, dislocations, sprains, amputations. Congenital changes, stress injuries, repetitive sprains Dupuytren’s Contractures, rheumatic diseases, edema, lymphoedema, tendon injuries, injuries of peripheral nerves, scars, tendinitis, burns.
 

Main Techniques Used

Manufacture of Orthoses, Therapeutic Activities, Compensation Devices, Training of Daily Activities, Functional Training, Compressive Therapy, Sensitivity Rehabilitation, desensitization, Electrostimulation, Therapeutic Exercises, Manual Therapy, Edema Control, Education and Prevention, Treatment of Scares, Prosthetic Training, Mirror Therapy.
