The breast, par excellence, represents the symbol of femininity.
Often, women feel that the contour, the volume and projection of her breasts are not adequate or have changed, which brings some discomfort in her self-image and self-esteem.
During the younger years, the underdevelopment and asymmetry of the breast, which are more frequent than is believed, affect the perception of self-image, the use of clothing, and behaviour in interpersonal and social interaction, with frequent isolation and withdrawal.
At other stages, pregnancy and breastfeeding, breast weight, as well as weight and hormonal variations, or the natural aging of the breast often result in breast ptosis (descent), due to changes in the glandular and support tissue, with altered projection and support.
The techniques of breast plasty are multiple and will be adapted according to the intended correction, always bearing in mind the harmony and symmetry of the breast in its size, shape, volume, projection, and positioning. They vary as to the need or not to include implants and as to the type, location, and extent of the scars. The results are usually very rewarding and the recovery is quite favourable.
In men, breast surgery is sought for treatment of bulky and unsightly breasts, called gynaecomastia, with good surgical results.
