Anesthesiology

Anesthesiology

Anesthesiology is a medical specialty where doctors are experts in Anesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Acute Pain Management - Chronic and Emergency in hospital care or our of hospital care.

In the Science Journal of 2008 is described as one of ten medical specialties that will progress most in the following 20 years.

The anesthesiologist takes care of the surgical patient throughout the peri-operative procedure, acting as his "guardian angel."

During surgery the anesthetist, takes care of the patient during the various types of surgeries.

In the post operative Recovery Room, the anesthetist ensures the continued well-being of the surgical patient.

Before surgery the patient has the opportunity to meet their anesthesiologist where he will answer any questions or doubts.

In labor and childbirth the support provided by the Maternity Anesthesiologists to the mother-to-be is fundamental, as they play a vital support in Analgesia / Anesthesia to the mother in labor.

This specialty plays a key role in the Intensive Care Unit, collaborating actively with other medical specialties in such units, using specific knowledge and techniques.

As a specialist in resuscitation, the anesthetist is involved with the continuous training of the entire network of emergency hospital staff.

Anesthesia and Sedation in Children

Anaesthesia in paediatrics has specificities that should be clarified to the child's parents/guardians, so that the process is carried out safely and efficiently. We have therefore put together certain procedures that have been adopted at the HPA Health Group.

Anaesthesia is planned depending on the child's clinical condition, on surgical, aesthetic and medical history, including usual medication and allergies.

Whenever possible, the anaesthesiologist discusses the anaesthetic technique options available with the child's parents or representative, explaining the risks, benefits and details related with the anaesthetic.

It is important for the parent to explain to the child, in such a way that the child  understand, what will happen (it is the parent that know the child best), so that the child becomes accustomed to the idea of hospitalization and the whole process of what will be happening  with him.

>> If the child is clearly ill, with flu or fever or has been, in the period leading up to the surgery, inform the hospital before making your way there, to find out if the surgery will be taking place or not.
>> It is important that all the recommendations provided by the nurse in the pre-anaesthesia  consultation be followed, namely a bath the night before and on the day of the surgery, according to the preoperative disinfection protocol and also comply with the necessary fasting, solids and liquids, according to the information leaflet provided.
>> Bring an object that the child feels comfortable with (toy, cuddly toy ...)
>> On arrival at the hospital, you will be met by the team of nurses working in the surgical in-patient department, who will verify all the data available. After validating all the information related to the pre-anaesthesia consultation, the nursing staff will then assist in all the procedures that will follow.
>> When the time arrives for the child to be taken to the operating theatre, the child is accompanied by the parents and his nurse, who will then leave him in the care of the anaesthesiologist and the operating theatre team.

Due to the physical characteristics of the operating theatre, parents are not allowed to enter. However, in some very specific situations, the anaesthesiologist may find the presence of a parent or caregiver beneficial. In these situations, all professionals' recommendations should be followed.

Serious problems arising from anaesthetic techniques are nowadays increasingly rare.
Most children recover quickly, reaching their normal state within the time allotted for recovery.
As a rule, they may complain of sore throat due to the ventilation tube introduced for anaesthetic purposes (pain that disappears with the intake of fluids), headache, nausea or vomiting.
Allergic reactions, fever and dizziness are considered to be very rare adverse effects.

It is important to follow all the nurse’s instructions.
Follow the instructions regarding rest and the beginning of the diet. It is important not to give the child food that is not provided by the hospital without the team's knowledge and approval, as it can affect the entire recovery process.
Once the child has recovered and his needs restored, after the doctor's visit, discharge will be prepared.
All necessary documents will be provided and both the medical and nursing teams will supply the information and recommendations necessary for the child's continued recovery.

Once back home, if any questions arise, parents can call the hospital on 282 420 400 (Portugal mainland), or 291 003 300 (Madeira Island), if they prefer, make their way to the Emergency Unit of the Hospital.
