Chronic wounds or complex wounds are associated with diseases such as diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, leprosy, cancer, neurological problems and other conditions. 


The Chronic Wound and Palliative Care Out-Patient Consultation is dedicated to the treatment of chronic wound including control of the symptoms, psychosocial support to the patient and family, and also bereavement support following the death of a loved one.

Chronic wounds or complex wounds are associated with diseases such as diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, leprosy, cancer, neurological problems and other conditions.

Wounds that have difficulty in healing and do not react to conventional treatments and / or simple dressings need hospital admission for treatment by a specialized and multidisciplinary team.

 

Some of the conditions which are dealt with in the Chronic Wound Out-Patients Consultation are:

  • Vascular ulcers or leg ulcers (vascular system impairment of the lower limbs) venous ulcers due to chronic venous insufficiency and arterial ulcers (due to arteriosclerosis), the cause is related to smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, high cholesterol and triglycerides.)
  • Neuropathic ulcers due to microangiopathy or diabetes mellitus.
  • Diabetic foot ulcers (the term “diabetic foot” refers to a set of complications in the feet and their consequences. In addition to ulcers, neurovascular alterations or infections may coexist simultaneously.
  • Pessure ulcers.

 

The global approach and treatment of chronic wounds includes:

  • Evaluation of wound and surrounding tissue.
  • Pain assessment.
  • Treating the wound and surrounding tissue.
  •  Dressings and materials necessary for each particular case.
  •  Arterial and venous ecodoppler whenever necessary.

 

Palliative Care

  • Palliative care is indicated in the various stages of cancer, chronic and non-cancerous diseases (organ failure, progressive neurological diseases, among others).
