Prosthodontics is a Dental Specialty that focuses on dental prosthesis in the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of oral function, comfort and appearance of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing teeth.
Damaged or missing teeth can be replaced in two distinct ways, either by fixed prosthetics on existing teeth or by implants.
In general, fixed solutions are preferable to removable prostheses, not only for aesthetic reason and functionality, but also for patient comfort.
Fixed prostheses
These prostheses are artificial teeth that are fixed onto natural teeth or onto implants using various procedures depending on the number of missing teeth and their condition.
It is possible to use individual crowns or bridges consisting of several teeth, as well as complete dental arches which are functional, aesthetic and comfortable for the patient, with a surprising effect.
Removable Prostheses
Removable prostheses commonly referred to as dentures, can be total or partial. They should be removed for oral hygiene or for resting of the gum tissue when necessary.Removable prostheses are placed directly onto the gums and when possible, on existing teeth.
They are made out of acrylic and/or metal alloys and their effectiveness is often limited and depend on the number of remaining teeth and structure, be it bone or gums needed for support.
