Bruises, also known as contusions, are marks on the skin resulting from injuries that damage blood vessels, causing blood to accumulate beneath the skin. They can occur after an impact or trauma, but may also appear spontaneously, especially in individuals with conditions that affect blood clotting.
How to treat bruises?
Apply ice: In the first 24-48 hours after the injury, apply ice to the affected area for 15-20 minutes every hour. This helps reduce swelling and pain. The application should not be direct to avoid burns. Always use a cloth or bandage for protection.
Rest: Avoid using the injured part of the body to allow the tissue to recover properly.
Elevation: Keep the affected area elevated to facilitate blood flow and reduce swelling.
Anti-inflammatory medications: Consider taking medications such as ibuprofen or paracetamol to relieve pain, always following the guidance of a healthcare professional.
Consult a doctor: If bruises appear frequently or without an apparent cause, it is important to see a doctor to investigate the underlying cause.
