The first unit in the Algarve and indeed in the southern region of the country to have Interventional Cardiology was the Hospital Particular do Algarve in Alvor.
Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death or disability in Portugal.
In recent years there has been a spectacular progress in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, which has led to a new sub-specialty in Cardiology – Interventional Cardiology.
Despite its socio-demographic development, the Algarve did not in its Public or Private Health Units, have the necessary facilities for emergency cardiovascular intervention. Patients who needed to be submitted to this procedure required ambulance transport to Lisbon, which is a contraindicated in this type of pathology. The patient’s life or his full recovery depends on being submitted to this intervention as soon as possible after a heart attack.
With doctors, technicians and skilled nurses utilizing state of the art equipment, we can now not only perform vascular catheterizations tests and diagnostic examinations in cardiology but immediate treatment of blockages of the arteries is also possible.
The Algarve Private Hospital is also prepared for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias as well as heart disease in children as well as pacemaker implants.
