The Oncology Unit of the Hospital Particular do Algarve – Gambelas offers its users the Scalp Cooling (cryotherapy of the scalp), an innovative technique for preventing hair loss during chemotherapy treatments. This refrigeration system, pioneered in the southern region of the country and used internationally, allows an important reduction in the risk of alopecia (hair loss) induced by chemotherapy. The technique involves the adaptation of a refrigerated “helmet” in each treatment, without significant risks, with the full support of the nursing team, experienced in its use. Minimizing this secondary effect, which impacts the quality of life of patients, will improve the acceptance and participation of treatments, with a reflection not only on their psychological well-being, but also on their success.
