With the start of the new school year, parents often have a long list of concerns and tasks to manage. To help, here are some tips on the use of school backpacks to prevent back pain and spinal deformities.
- Choose backpacks with wide, padded straps to distribute the weight evenly across the shoulders, minimising the risk of strain and discomfort;
- Look for other ergonomic features, such as adjustable straps for the shoulders, hips, and chest, as well as cushioning on the back;
- Ensure the backpack is positioned at the top of the back, with the bottom aligned with the waist height;
- Check that the weight of the backpack does not exceed 10-15% of the child’s body weight;
- For heavy items, such as musical instruments or sports equipment, consider alternative transport options like wheeled bags;
- Try to ensure that your child uses both straps to maintain balance and symmetrical posture, and does not carry bags on one shoulder or by hand;
- Pack heavy items close to the body, as this helps maintain better posture by aligning the load with the body’s centre of gravity.
