Endocrine Surgery

The Endocrine Surgery Unit of the HPA Health Group is dedicated to the diagnosis and surgical treatment of the main diseases affecting the endocrine glands thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands and neuroendocrine tumours. This is a highly specialised field that requires precision, experience, and strong coordination between multiple medical disciplines.

Endocrine disorders have a systemic impact, meaning that surgical decisions are rarely made in isolation. At HPA Health, every case is discussed within a multidisciplinary team involving

  • Endocrinology
  • Endocrine Surgery
  • Imaging, Pathology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Anaesthesiology and Oncology.

Imaging and Radiology
Imaging and Radiology play a crucial role, not only in characterising lesions but also in performing biopsies, which are essential for a safe and rapid diagnosis. Endocrinology works closely with the surgical team throughout the entire process, providing pre- and post-operative support, adjusting treatments, assessing hormonal function and ensuring metabolic stability at every stage.

Thyroid and parathyroid procedures
Thyroid and parathyroid procedures are the most frequent. Therapeutic decisions are based on an integrated assessment of ultrasound scans, cytology obtained through ultrasound-guided biopsy, laboratory tests and clinical evaluation.

The goal is to define the most appropriate treatment from a hemithyroidectomy to a total thyroidectomy while carefully preserving vital structures such as the laryngeal nerves. In parathyroid disease, precise localisation of the affected gland, combining Imaging and Nuclear Medicine, enables effective surgery with faster recovery.

Adrenal gland disorders and neuroendocrine tumours require extensive expertise due to their hormonal and surgical complexity. Close coordination between General Surgery, Endocrinology (for hormonal management), Anaesthesia, Imaging and Oncology ensures maximum safety, precision and continuous support, particularly in functioning or metastatic cases.

All treatment options are thoroughly discussed within the team, ensuring that each patient receives the most suitable and safest approach. Every therapeutic decision is individually evaluated, weighing risks, benefits and non-surgical alternatives.

The Endocrine Surgery service of the HPA Health Group provides excellence in care, from diagnosis through to post-operative follow-up.
