Ambulatory Surgery is referred to scheduled surgical procedures when admission and discharge occur on the same day. Surgical procedure aim at reducing hospitalization time, reducing the risk of nosocomial infection (infection acquired in a hospital setting) as well as patient satisfaction and de-dramatization of the surgical procedure.
Recent years the exponential growth of this type of surgery throughout the world, is mainly related to advances in surgical techniques with less and less invasive procedures, anesthetic and analgesic techniques.
Ambulatory Surgery in comparison with Inpatient Surgery presents immense advantages for the patient, of which we highlight the reduction in the number of nosocomial infections, less distance from family life, quicker family and professional reintegration. However, not all patients have indication for this type of intervention, since there are a number of criteria such as surgical, social, medical and anesthetic that must be met.
