Despite being a chronic disease, hypertension can be reversible if healthy habits are adopted, which means that it is within our reach to prevent its progression.
Hypertension, as its name implies, results from the pressure that the blood exerts on the walls of the arteries, constituting the main cause of cardiovascular disease and premature death worldwide.
It is estimated that 40% of the Portuguese population is hypertensive, with a major contributor being excessive salt consumption.
The consequences of hypertension are found mainly in the cardiovascular system - myocardial infarctions, strokes / cerebral infarcts, irregular heart rhythms, and heart failure - but also in terms of the kidney (insufficiency) and eye health (blindness).
However, there is good news regarding hypertension. Despite its chronicity, as mentioned at the beginning, it is possible to prevent and treat it, to which the following behaviour patterns contribute significantly:
- Reduction of salt intake;
- Consumption of a balanced diet;
- Avoidance of harmful use of alcohol;
- Regular practice of physical activity;
- Maintaining a healthy body weight;
- Avoidance of tobacco use.
Do not oppress your vessels, offer them a healthy freedom.
Treat your heart with love.
