News

Keep updated with the latest warnings of the HPA Heath Group.

22/10/2020

Information: Continuity of medical care, in suspected or diagnosed cases of COVID-19 infection.

None of the HPA Health Group hospitals or units is a “COVID-19 unit”.
However, we have defined referral protocols on decisions to be followed related to referrals in suspected cases or positive patients:

  • All patients who visit any of the Units of the HPA Health Group are screened by means of an epidemiological survey, and their body temperature is also measured;
  • Patients with scheduled appointments or examinations (non aerosol generators). When the epidemiological screening of cough, fever, difficulty breathing, or other symptoms associated with SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) are negative - the patient follows his normal circuit. If screening is positive, the patient is placed in the Isolation Area of the Emergency Unit for evaluation, if he so wishes.
  • iii) Patients in need of transfer from the Emergency Unit to the In-Patients Unit with a negative epidemiological screening result, are admitted to the preventive isolation unit and tested for COVID-19. If the test is positive, patients are referred to the 2 reference hospitals in the area; Faro and Portimão Public Hospitals.
  • Patients in need of transfer from the Emergency Unit to the In-Patients Unit with a positive epidemiological screening result, are admitted to the preventive isolation unit, placed in the quarantine area and submitted to two COVID-19 tests. If any of the tests are positive, patients are referred to the 2 reference hospitals in the area; Faro and Portimão Public Hospitals.
  • All patients with scheduled surgeries and/or scheduled aerosol-generating exams are previously tested for COVID-19. In case the result is positive, the surgeries and / or exams are subject to multidisciplinary risk/benefit analysis to decide whether to perform or reschedule the surgery and/or exam.

Serological blood analysis for IgG and IgM antibodies, for COVID-19 at the Alvor and Gambelas Hospitals

In addition to the swab test already being done at the hospitals (RT-PCR analysis), as from the 14th May it will also be possible to perform serological blood analysis for IgG and IgM antibodies for COVID-19. Doctor’s prescription is necessary.

To confirm appointments for both these tests, contact Call Center on:  282 420 400

These blood tests identify and characterize the status of immunity of patients that might have been infected by SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 disease); that is, it quantifies the antibodies of the IgG and IgM for the new coronavirus, circulating in the human plasma or serum.

May be advisable in the following conditions:

- People who had symptoms before the first documented case in Portugal;

-People whose condition was not diagnosed as a possible COVID-19 prior to an epidemiological context situation.

- Asymptomatic people who have been in contact with confirmed case of COVID-19.

Serological tests for IgG and IgM antibodies must not be performed during the acute phase of the infection, as they may give a false negative result.

The physiological explanation lies in the fact that during  the first days of being infected, it is the individual’s innate system that will function against the infection, and it is only days later that the adaptive system is activated, including the B cells, responsible for producing specific antibodies against COVID-19.

THE HPA HEALTH GROUP HAS PROPOSED THE HOSPITAL DE SÃO GONCALO IN LAGOS FOR THE TREATMENT OF THE CORONAVIRUS

To face the present Coronavirus Pandemic and also to collaborate within the National Health System in the Region of the Algarve, the HPA Health Group will be preparing its hospital in Lagos - the Hospital de Sao Goncalo - to receive infected coronavirus patients in need of hospital admission.

This availability was communicated to the Director of the National Health System. This measure will serve to alleviate the public sector as well as its professionals. Other support connected with its other hospitals in the Algarve was also proposed.

We wish to collaborate with the national effort to contain this pandemic and to minimize all its effects, informs the HPA Health Group.  From this moment the Hospital de Sao Goncalo will be dedicated exclusively to COVID 19 patients, with its 14 isolation rooms and 4 beds in Intensive Care.

Due to its location this unit will complement the available facilities of the NHS in the Western Algarve, by accepting this region's suspected cases and also those detected by the Emergency Units of the HPA Health Group.  The HPA has already last week announced and put in place its contingency plan, with specific circuits and defined procedures to avoid contamination by triage units in the exterior of each hospital. Also available is advanced medical support teams for immediate life support if needed. Simultaneously the HPA Health Group have organized a Teleconsultation System.  We cannot let our patients feel that they have been abandoned, as everyone is already extremely worried and scared with the present situation.     We have to therefore make available the necessary medical care for critical patients, patients needing continued monitoring and also all those patients that might need our medical attention for other reasons.   All efforts will make a difference. It is important for everyone to focus on what is essential: to combat this pandemic.

14/03/2020
