Pterygium and Chalazion Surgeries
Pterygium
Pterygium is an abnormal growth of the conjunctiva along the surface of the cornea, usually on the nasal side and toward the centre of the eye (pupil). It resembles a “skin” that grows over the surface of the eye. It is typically associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation and chronic dryness of the ocular surface.
To remove the pterygium, surgery is performed under local anaesthesia without the need for hospitalization. It is a short-term procedure.
Chalazion
Chalazion is a chronic inflammatory granuloma of a gland that causes a small nodule on the eyelid. It starts as a small red and oedematous (swollen) area that after a few days of pain disappears, however, maintaining the oedema.
To remove the chalazion, surgery is performed, which consists of a small vertical incision on the inner side of the eyelid. The procedure is painless, and the inside is drained through the cut. It is not necessary for the patient to be hospitalized as the procedure takes approximately 30 minutes.
