The Pharmaceutical Services of Hospital Particular do Algarve has an important role in the services provided throughout the hospital. They are responsible for the correct distribution, of the various drugs in the correct daily dosage, prescribed by the specialists in the various departments; maternity and intensive care unit as well as the various In-patient departments.
They also ensure permanent replacement of drugs in the Operating Theatres and O.R which is of fundamental importance in order to maintain the functionality of each department within the Hospital.
With the distribution of medication in individual daily dosage, the Pharmaceutical Services must guarantee that the medication supplied is in compliance with what has been prescribed by the physician. All services are computerized, which has completely reduced the possibility of error between what is prescribed and what is supplied by the pharmacy.
This department is also responsible for the repackaging of drugs in individual daily doses as well as for the control of drugs subject to specific legislation.
The selection and purchase of drugs for the Hospital Group is also the responsibility of Pharmaceutical Services in close collaboration with the Medical Administration and in accordance with internal protocols, with the objective of rational use of the necessary drugs. The criteria in obtaining the various drugs is based on drug safety, efficacy and cost as well as the reputation of the manufacturing laboratory.
