HPA Magazine 24 // 2025
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines obstetric violence (without explicitly mentioning the term) as any abuse, disrespect, and mistreatment during childbirth caused by health professionals that result in violations of the dignity of women. It can consist of direct physical abuse, humiliation caused by verbal abuse, lack of confidentiality, and negligence resulting in unnecessary pain and avoidable complications.
For example, procedures that are not medically necessary, such as routine labour induction; routine caesarean sections; routine episiotomies; non-evidence-based medical practices, such as the Hamilton manoeuvre and the Kristeller manoeuvre, are considered obstetric violence.
In 2024, we had 23% of episiotomies in all vaginal deliveries. We induced 25% of deliveries, and we did not perform routine caesarean sections. We did not perform the Hamilton manoeuvre or the Kristeller manoeuvre.
In our Service, we have zero tolerance for practices considered obstetric violence at all professional levels. We can proudly say that in 2024, we had 800 deliveries, and we had no reports of obstetric violence.
