In the last two decades, we have witnessed the exponential emergence of products and equipment used for non-surgical, non-invasive or minimally invasive aesthetic procedures. This has also stimulated the invasion in the area of aesthetics, by people and professionals who do not have the necessary skills to its practice. Procedures such as these can sometimes have complications, which should not be ignored. Therefore, it is imperative that those who carry out these procedures are not only skilled in this area, but that they also know how to deal with any complications that may arise.
Due to the trivialization of these procedures, we may sometimes forget the risks involved. The application of botulinum toxin and the fillers with hyaluronic acid (or other fillers), the most common and mediatised rejuvenation techniques, carries a risk of complications often associated with malpractice. These procedures should always be carried out by a certified professional, in the field of Plastic Surgery or Dermatology. This professional should have a sound knowledge of facial anatomy, be facilitated (in the case of plastic surgeons) by the surgical practice and mastery of the facial anatomy, as well as by the accumulated experience in treatment of skin lesions.
