Thermal Ablation with Radiofrequency or Laser and Sclerotherapy

Thermal Ablation with Radiofrequency or Laser and Sclerotherapy

Varicose veins are a common condition that can significantly impact a patient's quality of life, causing symptoms like pain, fatigue, heaviness, cramps, swelling, tingling, and even itching throughout the day.

In recent years, new techniques have been developed as alternatives to conventional surgery to treat varicose veins, from the smallest to the most prominent ones. Endovenous thermal ablation is one such minimally invasive technique that offers almost immediate recovery, causes less pain and bruising, leaves no scars, and reduces the risk of post-treatment complications. This procedure, which does not require hospitalization, uses heat (thermal ablation) applied from within the blood vessels (endovenously) and can be performed using laser fibers or radiofrequency catheters.

The endovenous thermal ablation process begins with an ultrasound to identify the affected vein. Local anesthesia is then applied, and a small introducer is used to insert either a laser fiber or radiofrequency catheter that generates heat to close off the problematic vein. The goal is to seal the damaged veins, allowing blood flow to be redirected immediately through healthy veins. This treatment restores normal circulation and does not require stitches.

These procedures have a short recovery time, though patients are advised to avoid flying afterward. Post-procedure care includes wearing compression stockings to prevent clot formation, reduce bruising, and minimize sensitivity. Follow-up imaging exams, such as Doppler ultrasound, are recommended to monitor the treated veins and assess the effectiveness of the treatment.
