Allergies and Oral Health: What do they have in common?

With the change of seasons, it’s common for those who suffer from allergies to begin noticing the first signs: a blocked nose, itching, watery eyes and that constant feeling of discomfort.

What many people don’t realise is that seasonal allergies can also affect the health of the mouth and teeth and, in some cases, even mask dental problems.

Sinusitis or Toothache?

During allergy flare-ups, inflammation of the paranasal sinuses is common, which can lead to sinusitis.
Because the maxillary sinuses are located very close to the roots of the upper teeth, this inflammation can cause apparent tooth pain, even when there is no cavity or infection.

If you experience toothache during a sinus infection, it’s important not to ignore it: only a dentist can confirm the source of the discomfort and recommend the appropriate treatment.

Dry Mouth: A Breeding Ground for Cavities

During allergy season, we tend to breathe more through the mouth due to nasal congestion. In addition, many antihistamines reduce saliva production.

The result? A dry mouth, less protected and more vulnerable to the development of cavities and gum disease.

Saliva plays an essential protective role: it helps neutralise acids and control bacteria in the oral cavity. Without it, bacteria thrive more easily, which is why it’s important to stay well hydrated and reinforce oral hygiene during this time of year.

Sore Throat or Dental Infection?

Sore throats are common in allergies, but swollen glands can have another cause: a dental infection.

If the discomfort persists, it is best to consult your dentist. A quick clinical assessment can distinguish between a simple allergic reaction and a dental problem that requires treatment.
