Antibiotics: Don’t Take Them for Everything

Antibiotics are essential medicines for combating infections caused by bacteria. However, their use should always be careful and guided by a healthcare professional. Many common infections, such as colds, flu, or other illnesses, are usually viral and therefore do not require antibiotics, as these drugs do not work against viruses.

Responsible Use of Antibiotics

Taking antibiotics without medical advice, or stopping treatment before the recommended duration, can have serious consequences. One of the most concerning is the emergence of resistant bacteria, meaning microorganisms that no longer respond to commonly used antibiotics.

This resistance makes infections harder to treat, increases recovery time, and can even put lives at risk.

Additionally, inappropriate use of antibiotics can cause side effects such as changes in gut flora, allergic reactions, or gastrointestinal discomfort, and can disrupt the body’s natural balance.

When Are Antibiotics Necessary?

Antibiotics should only be prescribed when there is confirmation or suspicion of a bacterial infection. Cases such as bacterial pneumonia, urinary tract infections, or skin infections are examples where antibiotic use is appropriate.

However, viral infections, such as flu, colds, or most sore throats, do not benefit from antibiotics and should be managed with supportive measures and rest.

How to Ensure Correct Use

To protect your health and help combat bacterial resistance, it is essential to follow these recommendations:

  • Always take antibiotics in the dose and for the duration prescribed by your doctor, even if symptoms disappear earlier.
  • Do not use antibiotics without a medical prescription, and do not use leftover medication from previous treatments.
  • Avoid sharing medication with others.
  • Inform your doctor of all medicines you are taking and any allergies you may have.
  • Maintain preventive habits, such as good hand hygiene, up-to-date vaccinations, and a balanced diet.

A Commitment to Everyone’s Health

Antibiotic resistance is a global problem, but it is also an individual responsibility. Every unnecessary use contributes to reducing the effectiveness of these medicines in the future.

At HPA Health Group, we emphasise the importance of responsible prescription and health literacy, promoting the proper use of antibiotics as part of our mission to provide safe, effective, and sustainable healthcare.
