Coconut oil and cavities: myth or ally of oral health?

In recent years, coconut oil has gained popularity as a natural product associated with various health benefits. From diets to skin and hair care, the idea has also emerged that its use in oral hygiene could prevent or even treat cavities. But how effective is this practice really?

Coconut oil is composed mainly of medium-chain fatty acids, with lauric acid standing out, to which antibacterial and antifungal properties are attributed. When included in a balanced diet, it may have antioxidant effects and contribute to overall wellbeing.

Can rinsing with coconut oil cure cavities?

There is no scientific evidence to show that coconut oil is capable of reversing an existing cavity. Dental caries is a multifactorial disease that causes the progressive destruction of enamel and dentine, requiring proper clinical diagnosis and treatment.

The treatment of cavities should always be carried out by a dentist, using appropriate techniques and materials according to the stage of the lesion.

It is essential to emphasise that practices such as using coconut oil for oral health do not replace:

  • Brushing teeth with an appropriate toothpaste;

  • Daily use of dental floss or interdental brushes;

  • Use of mouthwash when indicated;

  • Regular check-ups for monitoring and prevention.

Easy access to digital information has brought many benefits, but it has also increased the spread of content without scientific validation. In the field of oral health, following unfounded advice can delay diagnosis, worsen conditions and compromise overall health.

Before adopting any home remedy or trend promoted online, it is essential to seek advice from a dentist or dental hygienist.

Taking care of your teeth and gums is an investment in overall health. Prevention remains the most effective strategy to avoid future problems, through proper oral hygiene habits and regular assessments.

At Dental HPA, you will find qualified clinical teams, modern diagnostic tools and personalised care, focused on prevention, clinical rigour and patient safety.

Because when it comes to oral health, accurate information makes all the difference.
