First Robotic-Assisted Revision Knee Arthroplasty

The Orthopaedics Team at Hospital Particular do Algarve – Gambelas has performed, for the first time in Portugal, a revision knee arthroplasty using robotic-assisted instrumentation, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of orthopaedic surgery supported by advanced technology.

The procedure took place last Tuesday at Hospital Particular do Algarve – Gambelas, in Faro, and involved the revision of a total knee prosthesis, with replacement of the implant due to persistent pain following a previous knee arthroplasty.

Until now, the use of robotic technology in knee surgery had been primarily associated with primary procedures. This intervention therefore represents a pioneering step, applying robotic-assisted instrumentation to a revision procedure, which is technically more demanding due to the need for greater precision, planning and intraoperative decision-making.

Robotic-assisted surgery provides detailed, real-time information during the procedure, supporting the surgeon in assessing alignment and prosthetic component positioning. This approach enhances surgical accuracy, potentially leading to improved functional outcomes and a more tailored response to each patient’s specific needs.

This achievement reinforces Grupo HPA Saúde’s commitment to technological innovation, clinical safety and continuous improvement in patient care, consolidating its position in the use of advanced and highly specialised techniques within the field of Orthopaedics.
