We’ve reached the final episode of the first season of the Oncology Podcast, and to close with a bang, we addressed a key topic in the treatment of Prostate Cancer: The Importance of the Multidisciplinary Team.

In this episode, we discuss how collaboration between different healthcare professionals can positively impact both treatment and the quality of life of patients. The multidisciplinary team, composed of oncologists, psychologists, nurses, physiotherapists, and other specialists, plays an essential role in the holistic approach to patient care, offering support that extends beyond medical treatment.

Joined by Dr. Miguel Coutinho, psychologist at the HPA Health Group, Nurse Marta Rodrigues, and Physiotherapist Joana Pacheco, we explored the emotional impact of a

Season 2 | Episode 1 - Colorectal cancer: diagnosis and screening

We have kicked off the second season of the Oncology Podcast with the theme: Diagnosis and screening of Colorectal Cancer. This season will be moderated by Dr. André Andraz Cruz, an oncologist at the HPA Health Group. In this episode, we were joined by Dr. Dina Gaspar, a General and Family Medicine physician at the HPA Health Group, and Dr. Isabel Malta, a Gastroenterology resident doctor.

March is the month dedicated to the prevention of Colorectal Cancer, so we reinforce the importance of awareness, screening, and early diagnosis of this disease.

In this episode, we started by addressing the main risk factors, focusing on diet, a sedentary lifestyle, and genetics. We also discussed the key role of colonoscopy in screening and diagnosis as the preferred screening method and shared the reality of the screening program in the Algarve region. To conclude, we emphasized the importance of General and Family Medicine (GFM) in prevention, the implementation of screenings, hospital referrals, and patient follow-up during treatment.

 

 

 


 

Season 2 | Episode 2 - Colorectal Cancer: Surgical and Medical Approach to Localised Disease

The second episode of the second season of the HPA Health Group Oncology Podcast focused on the theme "Colorectal Cancer: Surgical and Medical Approach to Localised Disease". The podcast aims to demystify cancer and promote health literacy in a clear and accessible way, providing listeners with information on the latest approaches in the diagnosis and treatment of this cancer.

The episode was moderated by Dr André Andraz Cruz, an oncologist at the HPA Health Group, and featured Dr Paulo Sousa, a general surgeon, clinical director of HPA Gambelas, and president of the medical board of the HPA Health Group, along with Dr Júlio Teixeira, an oncologist at ULS Algarve.

The discussion began with the evolution of surgical treatment in colorectal cancer, analysing the most current approaches and the main challenges faced in its management. The issue of colostomy was also addressed, clarifying when this procedure is necessary and the advances made in this area.

We then explored adjuvant treatment in colorectal cancer, focusing on the importance of a careful selection of patients for this type of therapy. We also discussed the paradigm of treatments complementary to surgery in rectal cancer, and concluded by reflecting on the future prospects of its treatment, with an emphasis on therapeutic innovations.
