Scale and Polish: What It Is, How It Works, and Why It’s Important

Scaling, also known as a dental cleaning, is a simple, quick, and painless procedure that is essential for maintaining good oral health. Its main purpose is to remove tartar and dental plaque, helping to prevent issues such as gingivitis, periodontitis, tooth decay, and bad breath.

Tartar is hardened dental plaque that builds up over time, particularly along the gumline. If not removed, it can cause inflammation, bleeding gums, and increase the risk of periodontal disease.

Who should have a scale and polish?

Anyone recommended by a qualified professional, such as a Dentist or Dental Hygienist, can undergo this procedure. It is generally advised every six months, although individuals with orthodontic appliances, dental implants, or gum problems may require more frequent cleanings.

How is the procedure performed?

Scaling is carried out in the dental clinic using specialised instruments, typically ultrasonic scalers, which effectively remove tartar without damaging the teeth. In certain cases, hand instruments (curettes) may be used to clean below the gumline. The procedure takes around 30 minutes and is virtually painless, although patients with dental sensitivity may feel slight discomfort.

Benefits of scaling and polishing

  • Prevention of gum and periodontal diseases
  • Reduced risk of cavities
  • Fresher breath
  • Cleaner, more aesthetically pleasing teeth
  • Early detection of dental problems
  • Prevention of tartar build-up

To maintain the results and prevent tartar from returning, it is recommended to:

  • Brush teeth at least twice a day for two minutes using fluoride toothpaste
  • Use dental floss or interdental brushes to clean between teeth
  • Attend regular dental check-ups every six months

At Dental HPA, we ensure every scale and polish is performed with safety, comfort, and personalised care, protecting the oral health of all our patients.
