Sleep Disorders and Oral Health: What’s the Connection?

Getting a good night’s sleep is essential for overall health, but did you know that sleep quality also directly impacts your oral health? We often don’t associate sleep problems with dental health, yet there are signs in the teeth and gums that may indicate something is amiss during the night.

One of the most common examples is bruxism, the act of grinding or clenching the teeth while asleep. This involuntary habit can cause tooth wear, fractures, and even headaches or muscle pain upon waking. Another frequent issue is mouth breathing, which dries out the gums and promotes bad breath. In some cases, night-time acid reflux can also leave marks, wearing down tooth enamel due to repeated contact with stomach acid.

Among the more serious disorders is sleep apnoea, characterised by pauses in breathing during rest. In addition to affecting energy levels and overall quality of life, apnoea can manifest in the mouth through dryness, inflamed gums, and bite changes. Often, the first visible signs appear in the dental clinic, making regular check-ups essential.

Fortunately, there are ways to manage these issues. Dental appliances fitted by a dentist can help in cases of bruxism or mild sleep apnoea. Simple habit changes can also make a difference: maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding alcohol before bed, treating reflux, and sleeping on your side may reduce symptoms.

The most important thing is not to ignore the signs.

If you frequently wake with jaw pain, worn teeth, or a dry mouth, speak to your dentist, who may refer you for a more comprehensive sleep assessment if needed.

Caring for sleep quality is also caring for your oral health. Paying attention to small signs can prevent more serious complications and ensure not only more restful nights but also a healthier smile.
