Tattoos and Scars in the Sun: Essential Skincare Tips
Sun exposure can be particularly harmful to tattooed skin and to scars that are still healing.
In the case of new tattoos, the skin is inflamed and vulnerable, and ultraviolet (UV) rays may cause irritation, delayed healing, infections, and even premature fading of colours. For this reason, it is essential to avoid direct sunlight entirely for at least one month after getting a tattoo.
During this initial stage, protection should be provided through light, breathable clothing, preferably cotton, and by following a proper cleansing and moisturising routine, always according to the tattoo artist’s recommendations. Sunscreen should not be applied while the skin is still open or actively healing, and only becomes safe to use after full regeneration of the skin — typically four to six weeks later.
Even for older, fully healed tattoos, sun exposure remains harmful, as UV rays break down pigments and speed up fading. To preserve tattoo colours and prevent skin damage, it is vital to apply a high-factor sunscreen (SPF 50 or higher), ideally with physical or mineral filters, which provide greater stability and coverage. Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, especially during beach or pool days, and regular moisturisation should be maintained to keep the skin supple and healthy.
Scars, whether surgical or from injuries, also require special care. During the first three to six months, it is best to avoid any direct sun exposure. When exposure cannot be avoided, SPF 50+ sunscreen should be applied consistently, even on cloudy days, to prevent hyperpigmentation, which may darken the scar and make it more noticeable. Artificial tanning is strictly discouraged, as it worsens discolouration and impairs skin regeneration. Scar-specific products may be used to improve elasticity and reduce the appearance of the scar, ideally combined with gentle massage to stimulate local circulation.
Caring for tattoos and scars in the sun is not just a matter of aesthetics, but of skin health. Prevention is always the best approach to keep the skin protected, tattoos vibrant, and scars discreet. In the presence of persistent pain, colour changes, or signs of inflammation, it is advisable to seek a dermatologist’s assessment.
