The Importance of Using Lip Balm

Lips and Gums: Sun Protection Is Also Oral Health Care

With the arrival of summer and increased sun exposure, skincare becomes a priority. However, it is essential not to overlook an often-neglected area: the lips. Just like the rest of the body, lips are vulnerable to the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Their delicate structure and lack of melanin – the natural protective pigment – make them particularly susceptible.

Why is it essential to use lip balm with Sun Protection Factor (SPF)?

Lip balm with SPF acts as an effective barrier against UV rays, helping to prevent:

-Sunburn, which can cause pain, peeling and sores;

-Dehydration and cracking, which increase the risk of infections;

-Gum inflammation, worsened by dryness and prolonged sun exposure.

Why is it important to protect the gums from sun exposure?

Gums are often overlooked when it comes to sun protection, yet they can also be affected by UV radiation – especially during prolonged exposure, such as outdoor activities or time spent at the beach. Dehydration and gum inflammation caused by heat and sunlight can significantly impact oral health, particularly in individuals with gingivitis or other periodontal diseases.

Tips to protect lips and gums in the summer:

-Use lip balm with SPF 30 or higher, reapplying throughout the day, especially after eating or drinking;

-Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly;

-Avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours (between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.);

-Wear wide-brimmed hats to shade your face.

Protecting your lips and gums is a natural extension of oral healthcare. At Grupo HPA Saúde, we encourage the adoption of preventive habits throughout the year, with particular attention to seasonal changes that can affect oral well-being.
