The Role of Human Resources in the JCI Reaccreditation Process

Joana Griff | HR Director

Reaccreditation by the Joint Commission International (JCI) represents far more than the renewal of a quality seal. It reaffirms the organisation’s ongoing commitment to patient safety, clinical excellence, and continuous improvement. In this context, the role of Human Resources (HR) is both essential and strategic for the success of the entire process.

One of JCI’s key pillars is the competence, commitment, and behaviour of professionals. HR ensures that the organisation employs qualified, credentialled, and trained staff who are aligned with institutional policies and international standards of quality and safety.

Human Resources is responsible for structuring and maintaining robust recruitment and selection processes based on competencies, including:

  • Verification and updating of professional records, licences, and certifications;
  • Institutional onboarding programmes;
  • Continuous training, mandatory courses, and periodic professional development, with a focus on patient safety, ethics, effective communication, and risk management.

These actions ensure that every staff member is prepared to perform their duties safely and in line with JCI requirements.

Reaccreditation is a collective process. HR plays a fundamental role in strengthening an organisational culture oriented towards quality, safety, and shared responsibility. Through internal communication, training, and document management, Human Resources ensures that JCI standards are integrated into the daily practices of Grupo HPA Saúde, not merely observed during the audit.

JCI standards require clear policies, well-defined processes, and documented evidence. HR is responsible for ensuring that performance evaluation, disciplinary management, and occupational health processes are aligned with international best practices, and that records and documents are organised, traceable, and readily available for assessment.

JCI reaccreditation is not a final destination but a milestone in a continuous journey. Human Resources reinforces this commitment through the ongoing enhancement of people management processes, active listening to staff, systematic analysis of performance indicators, and implementation of actions aimed at strengthening organisational and clinical quality.

Although reaccreditation is a shared responsibility, Human Resources acts as a facilitator, guardian, and driver of the JCI reaccreditation process, ensuring that the right people, with the appropriate skills and behaviours aligned with a culture of quality, are at the centre of our mission to deliver care with excellence and safety.
