White Tongue: What It Is and How to Take Care of Your Oral Health

The tongue is an essential part of our mouth. In addition to allowing us to taste food, it aids in chewing, swallowing, and communication. However, the tongue can also be an indicator of changes in oral health, as is the case with a white tongue.

A white tongue occurs when bacteria, fungi, dead cells, and food debris accumulate on its surface, forming a whitish layer. This situation is generally associated with inflammation of the taste buds, which trap debris present in the mouth. While the most common cause is poor oral hygiene, a white tongue can also appear in people with weakened immunity, such as babies, the elderly, or patients taking antibiotics.

There are also some conditions that can cause changes to the tongue. Oral thrush, for example, is a fungal infection that primarily affects individuals with a compromised immune system. Lichen planus, an autoimmune disease, causes white patches accompanied by small painful sores on the tongue and oral mucosa. Leukoplakia is characterised by the appearance of white plaques in the mouth, including the tongue, and is more common in smokers; in some cases, it can be an early sign of oral cancer.

If left untreated, a white tongue can have consequences for oral health, such as tartar build-up, the development of cavities, inflammation and infections in the gums, infections of the tongue itself, and in more severe cases, tooth loss. Therefore, it is essential to reinforce good oral hygiene habits. Brushing your teeth after main meals and before bedtime, using dental floss daily, and cleaning the tongue are key measures to control the proliferation of bacteria and fungi.

If a white tongue persists for more than two weeks despite proper care, or if spots, pain, or discomfort appear, it is important to consult your dentist. At Dental HPA, our professionals carry out a comprehensive oral health assessment using advanced diagnostic tools and help identify the cause of the problem, offering personalised solutions for each patient.

In summary, having a white tongue is not always serious, but it should not be ignored. Prevention, through correct oral hygiene and regular check-ups, is always the best way to maintain a healthy smile and prevent complications.
