Wisdom Teeth: Does Everyone Have Them?

It’s common to hear the popular saying “those without wisdom teeth have no wisdom,” but the scientific reality is quite different. Not everyone develops wisdom teeth during their lifetime.

In other cases, even when wisdom teeth do exist, they don’t always become visible. Often, they fail to erupt through the gum and remain “hidden” within the jawbone. This means their presence may go unnoticed without specific examinations, such as an orthopantomogram (panoramic X-ray), which allows observation of their position and development.

Due to their location at the back of the mouth, wisdom teeth are difficult to reach during regular oral hygiene routines. As a result, they commonly accumulate food debris and bacterial plaque, which can lead to cavities, infections such as abscesses, and even cysts. These issues not only cause pain and discomfort but may also affect neighbouring teeth.

In some cases, wisdom teeth are removed as a preventative measure. A dentist can, through examinations and assessments, anticipate potential future complications, such as lack of space in the dental arch, pressure on adjacent teeth, or the development of infections. Preventive extraction is a proactive way to protect oral health and avoid more serious issues down the line.

So, while wisdom teeth are part of the dentition for many people, their presence and necessity vary greatly. More than a matter of “wisdom”, they should be evaluated based on health and functionality. If in doubt, the best option is to consult your dentist, who can recommend the most suitable monitoring or treatment plan.
