The Child and Youth Health Consultation is aimed at children aged 0 to 18, in order to promote health and prevent illness.

What are the goals of this consultation?

The goals are:

  • To monitor and assess children's growth and development;
  • Encourage health-promoting behaviours, including:

           - Adequate nutrition for different ages and individual needs, promoting balanced eating behaviours;

           - Regular physical exercise;

           - Preventing harmful consumption;

           - Adopting safety measures to reduce the risk of accidents.

  • Promoting immunisation against communicable diseases, oral health and breastfeeding;
  • Preventing emotional and behavioural disorders, accidents, bad habits and abuse;
  • Early detection and referral of situations that may negatively affect the life or quality of life of children and adolescents;
  • Preventing, identifying and knowing how to deal with common illnesses at different ages, reinforcing the role of parents and other carers, alerting them to signs and symptoms that warrant recourse to the various health services;
  • Signposting and providing ongoing support for children with chronic illnesses or disabilities, as well as their families, liaising with the various stakeholders;
  • Promote the personal and social development and self-determination of children and young people;
  • Support and encourage the proper exercise of parental responsibilities and promote family well-being.

How often should it be?

This consultation may take place at the following intervals, as recommended by the Directorate-General for Health (DGS). However, it should be adapted in certain cases.

  • 1st week of life
  • 1st month
  • 2nd month
  • 4th month
  • 6th month
  • 9th month
  • 12 months
  • 15 months
  • 8 months
  • 2 years
  • 3 to 4 years
  • 5 years - Comprehensive health check
  • 6 to 7 years - (end of 1st year of school)
  • 8 to 10 years - (start of 2nd year of primary school)
