Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis refers to inflammation of the conjunctiva, the surface membrane of the eye that forms a thin, transparent layer over the whites of the eyes and under the eyelids.

Conjunctivitis can be infectious (caused by bacteria or viruses, usually flu viruses) or allergic.

Infectious conjunctivitis can affect one or both eyes, with the white part inflamed, swollen, and red. The eyes may feel gritty, watery, or sticky, and the eyelids may become swollen and sticky, especially in the morning. Vision may become blurry due to excess tears or sticky discharge.

Viral conjunctivitis tends to cause red, watery eyes and can last two to three weeks, even with correct treatment. In most cases, viral conjunctivitis does not affect vision.

Bacterial conjunctivitis is more likely to cause red eyes with sticky yellow discharge.

Allergic conjunctivitis is, in most cases, related to an allergic reaction to dust, grass, or pollen. The seasonal type of allergic conjunctivitis varies depending on the time of year and weather conditions. People with allergies to dust mites or animals may experience symptoms at any time of year.

Bacterial and viral conjunctivitis are contagious and spread very easily through water droplets (coughing, sneezing) or contact with tissues, towels, or pillowcases. For this reason, it is very important to wash your hands frequently and discard paper tissues after use to prevent the disease from spreading to other family members or co-workers.

Allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious.
