What are GLP-1 agonists?

GLP-1 receptor agonists are medications that mimic the action of the hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), naturally produced by the intestine after meals.

These drugs act on several metabolic mechanisms, contributing to:

  • Reducing appetite;
  • Increasing satiety;
  • Sustained reduction of body weight;
  • Improving blood sugar control.

Who can benefit from the Weight Loss Consultation?

Inclusion Criteria:

  • People with a Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m² (obesity);
  • Or BMI ≥ 27 kg/m² with associated conditions such as hypertension, prediabetes, and elevated cholesterol, among others;
  • Aged 18 years or older;
  • Motivated to lose weight under clinical supervision.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding;
  • Family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2 syndrome (Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2);
  • History of pancreatitis or severe pancreatic disease;
  • Advanced renal or liver disease.

How is the treatment administered?

The treatment consists of a weekly injection via a pre-filled, easy-to-use pen, combined with a medical follow-up plan. The medication is progressively adjusted to optimise results and minimise potential side effects. The entire process is supervised by a healthcare professional who monitors progress, adapts the strategy as needed, and integrates other support areas such as nutrition, psychology, or physical exercise depending on the case.

Side Effects

Like any medication, GLP-1 agonists can cause side effects. The most common include nausea, a feeling of fullness, constipation, diarrhoea, or acid reflux, especially during the first weeks of treatment, usually transient and manageable with dose adjustments. Although rare, there are potentially serious adverse effects such as acute pancreatitis, gallstones, or, in very specific cases, changes in kidney function. Therefore, the treatment is always started and supervised by a doctor, with careful monitoring of clinical response and the patient’s overall wellbeing.

This consultation represents more than just a treatment — it is a commitment to your long-term health, with continuous support and solutions that respect your body, your pace, and your goals.
