The Impact of Excess Weight on Oral Health

Obesity is currently one of the main public health challenges and is commonly associated with conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

However, what many people are still unaware of is that excess weight can also have an impact on oral health. The mouth does not function in isolation from the rest of the body and, therefore, changes that affect the body often end up being reflected in the gums and teeth.

Obesity is associated with a state of chronic inflammation in the body. This inflammation can make the gums more vulnerable, increasing the risk of developing periodontal disease, a condition characterised by gum inflammation and infection which, when left untreated, may lead to loss of tooth support. People who are overweight often have a greater predisposition to gum problems and may experience slower recovery after treatment, due to the way the immune system responds to inflammatory processes.

In addition, certain habits frequently associated with weight gain, such as the consumption of foods high in sugar and ultra-processed products, contribute to an imbalance in the bacteria present in the oral cavity. This imbalance may favour the development of gum and dental problems. Even so, it is important to clarify that obesity in itself does not necessarily mean more dental caries; factors such as diet, oral hygiene and regular professional care remain decisive.

We now know that there is a direct link between oral health and general health. Gum problems can contribute to increased inflammatory processes in the body, while systemic changes may worsen oral diseases. Therefore, looking after oral health is also a way of caring for overall wellbeing.

Regular dental appointments allow early identification of signs of inflammation and reinforce preventive measures tailored to each individual. Adopting a balanced diet, maintaining good oral hygiene habits and attending regular professional check-ups are essential steps to ensure not only a healthy smile, but also a better quality of life.
