Scabies

Scabies

Scabies is one of the most common human parasitic infestations, caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, which only parasitises humans. In adults, it can be acquired through sexual contact or in family environments. The parasite burrows into the skin, causing an allergic reaction.

Common complaints include intense itching (especially at night); persistent papules and/or nodules; lesions resulting from scratching in characteristic locations; and rashes, particularly in areas such as between the fingers, armpits, genitals, and around the navel.

Infection can also occur via objects such as personal clothing or bedding, although this is less common. The incubation period ranges from three to six weeks, meaning symptoms may appear some time after initial contact.

Diagnosis is based on clinical signs, and in more complex cases, the mite may need to be observed under a microscope. Treatment is highly effective, usually with topical creams that kill the mite. To prevent transmission, it is important to avoid direct contact with infected individuals, not share clothing, and wash bedding and clothes in very hot water.

While scabies itself is not serious, it can lead to complications such as secondary bacterial infections from skin lesions. Additionally, it is important to consider the potential for transmission between animals and humans. In cases of dogs infected with sarcoptic mange, it is recommended to treat the animal and take precautions to avoid human contamination, although humans generally do not contract the disease from these cases.
