Chest Angina

Chest Angina

Chest angina is a symptom characterised by pain or discomfort in the chest, resulting from reduced blood flow to the heart, usually due to the narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries. This condition is more common in elderly people and can be a precursor to more severe events such as a heart attack. Angina often manifests during exertion. Diagnosis is based on clinical history, supplementary tests such as echocardiography, and stress tests.

The main cause of chest angina is atherosclerosis, which causes the narrowing of the coronary arteries, hindering the supply of oxygen to the heart muscle. Other factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and smoking also contribute to the worsening of this problem. Additionally, factors such as spasms in the coronary arteries or the presence of severe anaemia can also trigger angina attacks. The disease is more prevalent in people with a family history or congenital heart problems.

The treatment of chest angina aims to relieve symptoms and prevent the progression of coronary artery disease. Medications such as nitrates, beta-blockers, calcium antagonists, and antiplatelet drugs are commonly used to improve blood flow and reduce the risk of complications.
