Hypertension, as the name suggests, occurs when blood exerts excessive pressure on the walls of the arteries. It is the leading cause of cardiovascular diseases and premature death worldwide.
It is estimated that 40% of the Portuguese population suffers from hypertension, with one of the reasons being excessive salt consumption.
The consequences of hypertension mainly affect the cardiovascular system, potentially leading to myocardial infarctions, strokes, arrhythmias, and heart failure. It can also compromise kidney function (renal failure) and ocular health (retinal detachment, vitreous haemorrhage).
