Algarve Hyperthermia Center

The Hyperthermia Center of the Algarve is located at the Day-Care Hospital on the 2nd floor of the Gambelas Hospital.

Hyperthermia is an innovative therapeutic technique in the treatment of cancer as well as in some non-cancerous neuro-vegetative diseases. This technologically advanced equipment increase of the body temperature to between 39ºC and 45ºC, with the object of achieving a greater therapeutic efficacy.

Two types are available: LOCAL HYPERTHERMIA by radiofrequency and Infrared WHOLE BODY HYPERTHERMIA.

Both methods of treatment alone or in association with chemotherapy and / or radiotherapy aim at the destruction of cancer cells and tumors. In addition, they also have the capacity to boost the effect of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, allowing for quicker results.

These therapeutic methods are non-invasive and do not imply risks for the patient, nor do they cause relevant additional side effects.

The sessions are carried out on an outpatient basis, not requiring hospitalization.

Indications and Contraindications

Indications and Contraindications:

Tumors of the Cervix, Head and Neck, Lung, Breast, Pancreas, Melanoma, Bladder, Rectum, Prostate, Esophagus, Soft Tissue Sarcomas and of the Central Nervous System. It may also be indicated in Multiple Organ Metastasis (eg Liver, Lung and Bone) or in cases of recurrent cancer of the chest wall such as breast cancer.

It is indicated for other diseases other than cancer, such as chronic inflammatory processes of various types (such as sinusitis, arthritis), refractory chronic pain resistant to medication or  light muscle trauma.

LOCO-REGIONAL RADIOFREQUENCY HYPERTHERMIA is contraindicated for people with a coronary bypass or with metal prosthesis near the site of the tumor or irradiation area.


WHOLE BODY INFRARED HYPERTHERMIA produces irradiation  throughout the body. Each session lasts approximately 180 minutes.

Indications and Contraindications:

Tumors of the Uterus, Head and Neck, Lung, Breast, Pancreas, Melanoma, Bladder, Rectum, Prostate, Esophagus, Soft Tissue Sarcomas and Central Nervous System, as well as Multiple Organ Metastasis (eg Liver, Lung and Bone).

WHOLE BODY INFRARED HYPERTHERMIA is contraindicated in people with acute infections, heart failure, myocardial infarction, thrombosis, hyperthyroidism, pregnancy and epilepsy.

In non-oncological diseases such as, chronic inflammations of various types (Bronchitis, Asthma, Prostatitis, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's Disease), Fibromyalgia, degenerative disease of the locomotor system, chronic and recurrent addiction detoxification programs associated with other treatments as well as in the treatment of nervous depression (recent clinical studies).
